Growing up, every year on Christmas Eve, my family and I would sit down together and watch It’s a Wonderful Life. Every year, I would think the same thing: “why do we have to watch this old black and white movie?”
As I got older, I started to actually pay attention to the movie and the message it was sending. George Bailey’s life didn’t go the way he expected it to. It seems that every time he turned around, something else went wrong. It gets to the point where George felt everyone around him would have been better off if he had never been born.
The rest of the movie his guardian angel, Clarence shows him how life would have turned out without him. His brother Henry would have died when he was 12 because he wouldn’t have been there to save him. The pharmacist he worked for would have gone to jail if George hadn’t caught his deadly mistake in giving a customer the wrong pills. His father’s business would have failed because he wouldn’t have been there to take it over. The list goes on and on of all the people that George had impacted in his life, putting them in a completely different place without his influence.
Now that I am old enough to appreciate this movie, I take the message to heart. You never know the small impact you are making on someone’s life. You never know if a quick smile, or a how are you, or just being in the right place at the right time can help change someone else’s life forever. Your life matters. It matters to everyone in your life that loves you and every other person you come in contact with.
The world needs you and the impact that you make on it, as it wouldn’t be the same without you in it. Once you realize that you are making a difference by just being here, you can realize that you have no other choice than to be the best version of yourself. The impact you have on the universe would be missed if you weren’t here, so you might as well take the opportunity to be great, to follow your dreams and passions and the make the most of your life. Make your life wonderful & make it count.
On that note, Happy Holidays everyone. Enjoy this time with your family and friends. I hope 2015 was as good to you as it was to me and here’s to making 2016 even better.
